Morning Formula:
Niacin (as Niacinamide) – Niacin or vitamin B3 is important in energy production like many other B-complex vitamins. Two unique forms of vitamin B3 (called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, or NADP) are essential for conversion of the body's proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into usable energy. Niacin is also used to synthesize starch that can be stored in the body's muscles and liver for eventual use as an energy source.
Iodine (from Kelp) – Iodine is used by the thyroid gland to produce the hormones thyroxin and tri-iodothyroxine. They control our metabolic rate, the speed at which our body burns fats and sugars to release energy.
Chromium (Amino Acid Chelate) – Chromium is an essential nutrient required for normal sugar and fat metabolism and works primarily by potentiating the action of insulin. Chromium is needed for energy and helps maintain stable blood sugar levels.
Vanadium (Amino Acid Chelate) – In a number of animal and a few human studies, vanadyl sulfate has improved insulin sensitivity and reduced blood sugar in those with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This means that vanadium could help the body more efficiently manage blood sugar levels to keep you from crashing.
Guarana Extract - Studies involving guarana have shown benefits to cognitive function. Orally, guarana is used for weight loss, to enhance athletic performance, to reduce mental and physical fatigue, to treat chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and as a natural stimulant.
Green Tea - Used to improve cognitive performance and improve mental alertness. Green tea is also found in many weight loss formulas.
Calcium Carbonate - Calcium is a very important mineral in energy production. When your calcium levels are low, a hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D increase in response to the low levels of calcium. High levels of PTH and vitamin D are also seen during food shortage. In this starvation mode, your body will absorb and store more energy for later use. Therefore, if your calcium levels are consistently low, the elevated levels of PTH and vitamin D may trick your body into thinking you are starving. As a result, you may store more energy in the form of fat leading to weight gain and fatigue.
Galangal Root - Used as a natural stimulant to help improve alertness and cognitive function.
Cinnamon - Thought to contain constituents for increasing insulin sensitivity which helps your body more efficiently manage blood sugar levels to keep you from crashing after meals.
Citrus Aurantium - Bitter orange contains synephrine, a drug similar to ephedrine. Commonly known as adrenalin, epinephrine boosts the supply of oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscles keeping the mind and body alert.
Ginger Root - Has mild natural stimulant properties which can help improve mental alertness and boost cognitive function.
Capsicum (Fruit) - Commonly added to herbal formulas as a catalyst for other herbs. Capsicum may also stimulate digestion and enhance blood flow.
Day Formula:
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) – Benefits of vitamin C such as prevention of scurvy are well known. Vitamin C also has a role in several other physiological functions. It is involved in tyrosine metabolism and is a cofactor in the synthesis of carnitine, thyroxin, norepinephrine, dopamine, and tryptophan. Vitamin C is also involved in a variety of metabolic processes including oxidation-reduction reactions and cellular respiration, carbohydrate metabolism, synthesis of lipids and proteins, catabolism of cholesterol to bile acids, conversion of folic acid to folinic acid, and iron metabolism. Vitamin C deficiency has been associated with fatigue and decline in psychomotor performance and motivation. Some evidence suggests that subclinical vitamin C deficiency is more common in healthy people than generally recognized. Since the nonspecific symptom of fatigue is often the first symptom of deficiency, vitamin C depletion may go undiagnosed.
B Vitamin Complex - A good supply of B vitamins is extremely important in energy production. B vitamins are essential for conversion of the body's proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into usable energy. B vitamins are also used to synthesize starch that can be stored in the body's muscles and liver for eventual use as an energy source. They are also helpful in tissue respiration, cellular growth, and several aspects of intracellular metabolism. Adding a steady supply of B vitamins to your diet can help maximize energy stores within the body as well as energy from foods.
Night Formula:
Vitamin E - Vitamin E is a well known antioxidant. The tocotrienols in vitamin E are known for their superior antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are important for their ability to scavenge free radicals, which are damaging elements produced through natural metabolic processes or by environmental stress such as pollution and smoking. The structure of tocotrienols allows them particular effective access to the brain and liver. Evidence also points to vitamin E’s ability in aiding tissue repair.
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine HCl) - Pyridoxine is required for amino acid metabolism. It is also involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. In the body, pyridoxine is converted to coenzymes pyridoxal phosphate and pyridoxamine phosphate, in a wide variety of metabolic reactions. These reactions include transamination of amino acids, conversion of tryptophan to niacin, synthesis of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the CNS, metabolism of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids and phospholipids, and the synthesis of the heme component of hemoglobin. It's thought that pyridoxine can help increase serotonin levels. This is important because serotonin plays an important role in regulating several bodily functions including sleep.
Zinc (Sulfate) - Zinc is essential for growth and development, reproduction, digestion, respiration and proper brain, nerve, vision and immune function. Proper zinc levels can help with everything from regulating hormones to healing from major surgeries.
Melatonin - Melatonin is a natural hormone produced in the pineal gland at the base of the brain. It plays a key role in the regulation of sleep and is believed to be important in maintaining the body’s normal circadian rhythm or 24 hour sleep cycle. Supplementing melatonin has been shown to be highly effective in helping people regulate sleep and reach REM sleep, especially in smaller dosages.
Valerian Root Extract - Sleep enhancing properties of valerian were related to two flavonoids: 6-methylapigenin and Hesperidin. Valerian acts as a natural tranquilizer and can soothe anxiety, nervous tension, insomnia and headaches. Studies have shown that valerian can reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep and it helps improve the quality of sleep. An added benefit is that valerian does not have the side effects found in prescription sleep aids like drowsiness the next day.
Lemon Balm Extract - Lemon Balm has been used since the Middle Ages and has been shown in clinical research to promote calming and induce sleep.
Passion Flower Extract - Passion flower has been used in England and Germany in over-the-counter sedatives. It helps relieve anxiety, restlessness and insomnia as well as nausea caused by anxiety.
Lavender - Lavender seems to decrease alertness, promote relaxation, and induce sedation possibly by decreasing EEG potentials.
Hops - Hops are best known for their use in brewing beer, but they have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Hops function as mild sedatives and have shown to be effective sleep aids due to their content of flavonoids.
